Empowering Whānau, Uplifting Tamariki
Every tamariki deserves a fair start.
For more than 65 years, Birthright has walked alongside whānau led by one parent. Today, we continue that mahi with the same compassion and belief: no matter the challenges a whānau is facing, they deserve support that uplifts and empowers.
We back single parents and caregivers doing the tough mahi of raising tamariki on their own. We offer practical help, emotional support, and access to services that make a real difference—whether that’s budgeting advice, counselling, parenting support, or just someone to talk to.
We know the system isn’t always easy to navigate. That’s why we focus on what each whānau needs, with no judgment and no one-size-fits-all approach. Our services are free, confidential, and shaped around each family’s circumstances.
From the Hutt Valley to Hawke’s Bay, from Waikato to Wellington, our regional affiliates are rooted in their communities and connected to the broader Birthright network. Some focus solely on single-parent families, others support a wider range of whānau—but all share our belief that tamariki thrive when their caregivers feel seen, supported, and strong.
Our Vision
Nurtured – Resilient – Inspired children and families.
Our Mission
To provide holistic services and programmes that enhance the wellbeing, resilience, and opportunities for tamariki, rangatahi, and whānau across Aotearoa.
More than 167,000 tamariki in Aotearoa live in single-parent households. Many whānau face tough odds: housing stress, food insecurity, mental health struggles, or simply the loneliness of going it alone. We’re here to make sure no family has to face those challenges in isolation.
Our Beliefs
- Every child deserves a good start—this is their birthright.
- Families, no matter their shape or story, have strength and potential.
- The right support, at the right time, can change the course of a child’s life.
- The system should work for whānau—not the other way around.
- Tailored Support: Our social workers, mentors and partners build long-term relationships with families, not tick-box plans.
- Community Connections: We collaborate with schools, health providers, iwi, and other services to wrap care around whānau.
- Cultural Responsiveness: We centre te ao Māori and walk with respect for every family’s identity, values, and culture.
- Prevention and Advocacy: We tackle the root causes—not just the symptoms—of hardship, and we speak up for systemic change.
Together, we can build a future where every tamariki thrives.
