Every term break Birthright Wellington hosts a two-day children’s self-esteem building programme.

In September 2016, 12 children between the ages of 6 and 12 were identified as children that would otherwise miss out on experiences that would increase their self-esteem.

The activities chosen for the September programme included an interactive tour of Pataka museum, followed by a picnic in the park and an exploration of forensic science at the New Zealand Police museum in Porirua.  

Birthright Wellington’s Service Manager Bonnie Mawson says, “The children thoroughly enjoyed getting up close and personal with all things ‘police’ at the museum, particularly learning about police forensics.”

The children also enjoyed a swim at the Porirua pool, taking full advantage of its amazing facilities such as the hydro slide, wave pool and bumper boats. 

“We were really privileged to have the Café Kaizen supply the children with a fabulous café lunch,” says Bonnie. 

A special trip to the movies capped a successful few days, which the children thoroughly enjoyed.

“This programme makes a huge difference to children will low self-esteem and limited opportunities to enjoy fun and new experiences.”
